For those who get weirded out by feminine hygiene products, you might just skip reading this post and come back tomorrow. For those with a witty sense of humor, I can't wait to read your comments below.
A little while ago, I got a request from a friend to make "something to keep my tampons from flying out of my purse". Flying tampons is a problem, indeed. I had a good search for a tutorial to follow, but was not able to find something that I really liked. I did, however, find this pattern that looked interesting.
And I gave it a go, making one wallet. This may just be the tester version. Now that I kind of know what I am doing, I think I can make the next one a bit better.
It's a tri-fold wallet with a little strap that wraps around the whole purse, holding it together with a little piece of Velcro.
Inside there are little pleated pockets for tampons (five here), followed by a pocket for a little, folded panty liner (middle huge red pocket) and finally a pocket for pain meds (blue, on the right). There's more than enough space to hold everything you need in your bag. Maybe a bit too much...it is a wee bit chunky and not at all subtle for a small handbag, contrary to what I anticipated given it's the Incognito Wallet.
Although I am reasonably happy with the fabrics used here and with the overall layout, there are two mistakes that are driving me crazy. The first little pocket (total left) is too small for a tampon as I didn't take the final seam allowance into account. Stinker. It's also a small bit of a "free for all" when you're lining up the pocket with the outer casing. I didn't realize that mine went on a bit wonky, leaving it at an angle. Both are easy to fix in version two. I'll have to give it another try this weekend...or I may have had enough and am ready to move on. Time will tell.
In other news, I am so happy to tell you that the 56 spots in our rainbow charm swap are filled. There are lots of new faces/names in this swap, so I am very excited to get to know you all better. Thank you all for your enthusiasm!
That's a brilliant idea!
ReplyDeleteJust speechless but lol! Di x
ReplyDeleteYou are thinking about everything .. panty liners .. pain killers ... perfect! The fabrics are great.
ReplyDeleteBloody genius!! I hate those flying tampons, they always pick the most inopportune moments to pop out if your handbag and say hello. Like rummaging for your Tesco club card in a packed checkout.
ReplyDeleteHa! Great idea. Now if you can figure out how to alleviate the raging bitchiness, I'll be set!
ReplyDeleteLooks good from here, my friend commented about my pencil rolls and mini art folio saying that they would work as well for tampons if slightly bigger - never got round to making one though!
ReplyDeleteGenius! I have a small piece of cotton laminate perfect for the outer cover. It also sucks when the tampons manage to shed their wrapper and go rogue in your handbag. Much worse when they fly out!!
ReplyDeleteUs women of a certain age have absolutely no use for one of your pretty purses- there is at least on good thing about getting older.... much older!!
ReplyDeleteIt was worth all the hot flushes and night sweats to leave all that palaver behind.
ReplyDeleteWhere do I put my wine glass? Really, this is a great project and thanks for sharing the "it's not perfect yet" phase.
ReplyDeleteTo be truly inclusive it needs a pocket for emergency chocolate and a handful of salty peanuts for my pre- and during- phases, too. I suspect that large middle pocket could be used for that.
ReplyDeleteAnd to be really, really inclusive, you'd everything to be secure enough that you could wield it, unrolled, as a nunchuck on anyone that annoys you during PMS.
Hilarious!!
ReplyDeleteWhere do you put the bathroom sink?
So glad I don't have a use for it but I think I know a woman or two that could use it. I think you should write a tutorial...hey I think Leanne is about to put a call out for tutorials for the 2nd quarter FAL tutorials.
ReplyDeleteJust smiling from ear to ear - if you could just find a place for the raging hormones it would be perfection!! Actually, it already is - I love it!
ReplyDeleteNothing worse than a full on tampon assault. Actually, maybe there is, for some reason the disposal bins they put in our office loos this week are a bit too big, so are jammed alongside the loo seats - I swear one bit me earlier on...
ReplyDeletegreat idea, love the fabrics you used as well, great colours
ReplyDeleteClever idea --I think I would have just gone for a zipper pouch!
ReplyDeleteI'm with Pam on using the larger pocket for emergency chocolate (or beef jerky-hey, no judgment, I can't help what the month monster wants). And really, sometimes I think the pesky things are spring loaded like when I'm trying to find a pen in my purse while sitting in the choir seats in front of the whole congregation at church, go ahead ask me how I know :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea, I expect your next one will be perfect.
ReplyDeleteI'm not at all coy about things like this (and I think your roll is lovely)....but even I had to admit to being a LITTLE shocked, when looking through Amanda Blake Soule's lovely book "Handmade Home", to discover she has a pattern for sewing her own sanitary towels!! Yuk! I'm not quite that eco ready yet! x
ReplyDeleteHey, I think that's a great idea. It's embarrassing to pull out a wallet only to have private things fly out as well as the guy at the cash register stares at you. That's a great way to be organized.
ReplyDeleteoh do i have experience of flying tampons! They seem to jump into my hand when I'm rummaging in my bag for something, I usually then pass that "thing" which is really the tampon to the unsuspecting person who asked for a pen or a Polo...
ReplyDeleteThe wallet looks good, the pouch on the side would not be big enough for my pain meds though, I'm going to make a triple zip just to hold them all!!
Rofl, flying tampons. I got fed up of my daughter pulling them out thinking they were sweeties and made a little drawstring pouch to put mine in.
ReplyDeleteToo funny - I actually have a few feminine products sitting on my cutting table right now so that I can make myself something similar!! Great minds, eh? :)
ReplyDeleteOh this did make me laugh. It's a great idea. You could even bring it on it's own into the loo's without embarrassment. Although if you try to apply lipstick with a tampon there may be a problem :)
ReplyDeleteYes a little emergency chocolate wouldn't go amiss! Clever you!
ReplyDeletegreat!!
