Yes. You are reading that correctly. These blocks are for May. I tried to make bee blocks
previously for
Erin using her own beautifully written
tutorial. With my continual struggle against the scant quarter inch seam, I made a mess out of the original blocks. They were about an inch too small and no amount of unpicking and re-sewing would find that lost inch.
Instead I have been practising my scant quarter inch seams and have (are you ready for this!?!?) finally fell in love with the idea that it can actually help me! I re-cut my scraps, cut fresh little Kona White squares and dove in again to make two 12 1/2 inch square block for Erin.
I hope these fit with the others a bit better, Erin. Let's forget those little 11 1/2 inch shorties ever crossed your threshold. xx
Sorry you struggled, but these are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThey look beautiful. Have you a foot with the right hand guide? They make life a lot easier.
ReplyDeleteOhh they are so bright and pretty! I struggled with the scant seam thing too but finally released my 1/4 foot is not a scant seam! Now I use a line on my regular foot when I need a scant seam. It does make a huge difference! I like when patterns say if you need a scant seam because I know straight away which foot to use!
ReplyDeleteYapee you made them! They are looking so pretty. You will get better at it.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was just me being bad at it. Lucy @ Charm about you's comments are interesting too - I'm off to measure my feet....
ReplyDeleteWell done for persevering with the scant seam. It makes a world of difference especially when there are lots of seams in a block. Every tiny bit gained is more likely to bring your block in on size. Pretty too!
ReplyDeleteYay, glad you sorted it :o)
ReplyDeleteYour blocks are gorgeous, so full of fun fabrics and happy colours. Oh that tricky seam. I've just started sewing for a swap and am now worried about my seam, usually I just bumble along with no concern about scantiness. I'll take this post as a warning to check my seams.
ReplyDeleteI still struggle to make the blocks the right size too. Different thread, different fabrics, different barometric pressure, they all seem to mess me up. I have taken to testing the seams on any blocks where it matters.
ReplyDeleteWell done on conquering the scant 1/4" seam. The block is lovely. Jxo
ReplyDeleteHurray for your scant seam!!
