Stop the press!

Or should I say "Print more!  Print more!"?

I was recently in the Galway city center book shop.  I would not call it the Mecca of magazine suppliers, but they have a reasonable selection of quilting magazines.  I just popped in on a lovely evening after work to see what's new in the quilting section.  More often than not, I get frustrated that every quilt on every magazine cover is brown and traditional and I do not buy anything.  I think many of you already know of my struggle and share it yourself.

But wait!  Today was a little different.  I found this:

Modern Quilting Magazine?!?!?  What?  Have you all heard about this?  Am I the last to join this train?  It must be new.  It says it's issue one.  But how can it be that we didn't know this was coming and/or didn't jump all over it as soon as it was out?

I have not read it yet (too excited to tell you guys about it...), so I am not a judge of its content.  I just love the idea that it exists at all.  At first glance I see a few things that make me happy...

Doesn't this look like a few of our Mouthy Stitches pouches?

Who doesn't love little skulls with their coffee?

Just so we knew it was indeed a real quilting magazine and not a farce, there's one brown quilt.  Still, I would love to see this with crazy bright fabric:

Right.  I am off to read!  Did you guys already pick this up?  What did you think about it?

Haven't seen it 'down under' yet, although I think I have seen it on a couple of US blogs! Enjoy it and maybe even find something to make? I hope so!

I have a feeling I've seen it blogland recently, but not 100% sure. The chances of me stumbling across it here is very slim. I love the Mug cosy!!

Forgot to add that any of those imported magazines ends up costing nearly as much as a quilting book for us!

aaaahhhh... I'm sick and I can't go to town!!! I'm going to risk it and ask my other half to get a copy for me... hoping he doesn't come back with 4 or 5 other magazines that have nothing to do with the one I ask...
this one looks really good!

oooh Cindy! Let us know if you are still as excited after reading it! Not sure that I actually have time to read blogs and magazines anymore but useful if you are in transit! Or should I just get an i-pad?

Hi Cindy
I had found out about this new mag on the Sewing Directory and subscribed so it gets posted to me. I received my copy last week and when I saw the bag I knew that I wanted to use my rainbow scraps from a recent swap. Because I subscribed I also have access to a digital copy as well so that if I forget to bring my mag with me I can read it online

I haven't seen it here in the states, but I think I may have to make sure to stop at the magazine section of the store and take a look. I think it's one I would love!

I've been keeping an eye out for it but not seen a copy in the flesh - only heard people blogging about it.

Seriously? SERIOUSLY?!!! I can't find a flipping copy ANYWHERE in Glasgow!!! You couldn't do me a favour and grab one for me and I'll get it from you in a couple of weeks in Connemara could you? :oD

Mr Google took me to their Facebook site, which has links to subscribe. It looks like it is from the UK, but there are international subscriptions:

UK READERS:
- You can buy your copy of Modern Quilting from WH Smith or Hobbycraft shops

UK AND EVERYWHERE ELSE IN THE WORLD:
- You can buy the magazine from our website http://www.insidecrochet.co.uk/shop.php?crn=205&rn=537&action=show_detail

You can buy a digital copy through www.payloadz.com or www.free.yudu.com

Don't you think they should give me an international subscription for finding this???

Get a subscription - it's cheaper, you get it before everyone else, and you get a free digital copy too, if you are on the go!!!

A few bloggers have been showing off the pages where their projects are lately. We don't get it in Canada, unfortunately.

Like Leanne, we don't get it here in the states either. I would love it though...I can tell just by the pages you have shared Cindy. I am jealous. I have tried to find a link to email the publisher to see if I can get a subscription here in the states but can't find a link anywhere! So sad!

I had heard about it but you know, it ain`t coming here anytime soon but now I`ve read Hadley`s comment, I`m going to buy it if you get a digital edition. Yippee!

I got it recently in Cork, still making my way through it, there are some lovely projects! I have read some troubling blog posts recently about the publishing company and the way it works which makes me slightly uneasy about continuing to buy it, particularly if they are all true :-( It's hard to know. I used to buy their sister publication Sew Hip religiously for about 2 years and loved it for a long time!

I have yet to buy a quilting magazine, I have bought one copy of SewHip, and I had a subscription to Burda for a year, I find I look at a lot of magazines and think I wouldn't use any of it.
But that looks good so I might get it if I spot it.

Happy reading, let us know whether it is a good buy!

I haven't managed to get a copy yet but was hoping to get in Stirling this weekend. Although if Katy can't find one in Glasgow I'm sure I'll have much success. It does look good though.

I'd heard a few other bloggers talking about it, but as I'm rarely in a shop I haven't managed to get a copy yet! Would you recommend it? I often think they are a waste of money if there's nothing in them worth making. Jxo

I haven't seen this magazine yet, but I need to hunt it down just for that first picture you shared - i *need* to make one of those :)

I've been trying to get hold of a copy but not managed it - WH Smith in Chester seemed totally oblivious to it!
Lynne at Lily's Quilts has a gorgeous Scrappy Tiling Cushion in there.
Modern Quilting has a facebook page and I think there's a phone number that you can call to buy a printed copy so I'll try that.

Unfortunately there's much more than I few people unhappy about the company that publishes this magazine. Read this: http://www.rockandpurl.com/2012/02/24/the-box-it-is-open/

I feel sad because I was wanting to read it, I know there's lots of great looking articles and wonderful quilters in it. However, after reading the number of people being treated badly I just don't think I can I buy it :(

Hi Cindy, I just got my copy today at Eason's, thank you for the tip.

DangAndBlast! said...

Heh, different problem here (Texas) - was just disappointed that the quilting mags at Joann's were all either modern or the super easy turning twenty style "quilt tops in ten minutes!" kind. Traditional for me, please! :)

It sounded exciting -- until I found out who the publishers were and their track record! I suppose you know that they have now gone into receivership?
