Granny's Putting Up A Fight

I know you will not going to believe it, but I am struggling to make 2 more granny squares for my Do.Good Stitches circle.  How can that be?  Well, it is true.

I have to change from this tutorial to this tutorial when making these blocks and it is nothing short of melting my brain.  I cut the little pieces earlier in the week so that I would have a quick and easy project for some night after work.  A nice little colorful sense of satisfaction one evening.  Wrong.  So wrong.  My block corners reliably look like this:

I tried to cheat and return to my tried and true tutorial.  I scaled up the blocks a small bit to reach the requested block size and match the second tutorial's requirements, but still no luck.  It's too small. Still, it will not go to waste.

I think I have sorted out the problem now so, once I regain the will, I will give them one more try.  If I fail again, I might just end up sending the lovely Dolores a few bars of chocolate and asking for her forgiveness.

To not toss the sewing machine out of the window, I was looking for a quick sewing fix to bring happiness.  Instead I cut charm squares for the Japanese Charm Swap...

and pulled fabrics from my stash.  I'm queen bee next month in the Modern Irish Bee.  It is time to get things sorted, cut and packed up for the ladies.  More on that next week....

Feeling a bit better now!  I'll try to tackle that granny again tomorrow.  She's putting up more of a fight than I expected :)

Cindy, I don't mind which tutorial you use as long as the block measures 9 1/8"-9 1/4". I'm sorry this has been a bugger of a block to get the right size.

How about using the Great Granny square tutorial (http://www.beeinmybonnetco.blogspot.co.uk/2012/07/great-granny-along-and-giveaway.html) leaving out the last coloured "round"? ie put the white edges on one round sooner. (Does that make sense?)

I just started making those and the tute is really easy to follow. I see Dolores above me has given you the sizes she wants. I don't know how big the GGS-less-one-round would work out but it might be worth a go. :o)

Ooh some things just are a pain! Have a glass of wine or two - relax - and have another go when you are chilled and not rushing! I am convinced you will kick that granny into dust!

Still struggling with Granny here too! (Is it nice to know it's not just you?) I'm hoping a little tweeking will get me a couple of squares the right size. (Pretty sure I'm going to use the tutorial with white squares and trim them off.)

Those grannies can be touch little cookies, not the fragile things some people think they are. ;-)

You will be able to find a use for that pretty little granny.

Love that stash of fabrics.

I am loving that wrong size one! It is too bad that it became complicated as this is supposed to be an easy scrappy block. Don't give up on it but I am glad that I added the sashing to mine so that they are not so size sensitive.

How frustrating for you!

Seems like you've got a grumpy, irritable granny instead of one of the 'I've baked you a cake, let's sit in my beautiful garden to eat it' grannies...can you swap her?!!
P.S. Love the charms!

Grannies can be sneaky when they want to be!!

Ah the specific sizing can be a pain I usually go with 2.5" squares and hope for the best. The background never turns out right!
Loving those fabrics =D

I know what you mean about those stubborn grannies! I've only ever made 2 blocks and won't be too concerned if I don't make another! Not fun! Jxo

Not to be too mean Cindy but it's good to know it doesn't just happen to me! It's so frustrating, especially when you have a project filed away in your head as 'easy peasy'. I'm in love with your Granny blocks and was thinking of trying them, maybe I'll reconsider :)

and here I was thinking they were easy piecy... Thanks for the warning! (if Dolores doesn't want the chocolate I wouldn't mind...)

That orange one sure has great color, you should make more of those 'wrong' ones.
I've had similar issues with other bee blocks, and I always think, there are 11 other women in this group who obviously had no problem with the block, what's up with me?
I've ordered my fabric for the JCS swap (the US one)!
