Quiet Around These Parts

We had a lovely, quiet weekend here in Galway so I have very little to tell you.  There were walks with the dog, dinner with friends, laundry (of course) and a little bit of stitching.  I really enjoyed sit down to my cross stitch each evening.

The little bone is done and dusted and (with any luck) the "HOME" will be finished tonight.  Just half of the H left.  As you may remember, though, the lettering is more "funked up" than this.  I have to go back and do a little prettying up of the OME.  Easy peasy.

For a laugh, do you remember that I made hand warmers for my family as a Christmas stocking stuffer?  My SIL came back to me with this story of how she's using them:

"I've been meaning to tell you (and I thought everyone else would find it funny too) that I used your hand warmers when it was so so so cold a week or so ago to walk Lolo - I think it was 5 degrees when I went outside.  Well, they worked marvellously!  My hands were toasty warm the entire time.  The funny part was that when the rice was warmed up it smelled delicious, kind of like popcorn, so all of the dogs in the park were hovering around me and sniffing my hands.  They thought I was depriving them of a treat!  It was very funny.  I looked kind of like St. Francis.

Anyways, thanks for keeping us warm!"

Hilarious!  Catherine, you are cracking me up!

What? It's Wednesday?

If you are looking for the Goodie Swap Sign Up post, click here.  Join in the fun!

I can not believe how quickly this week has gone by.  I have very little to show for it.  Here is the mini-news, but its the best I can do.

There are now 43 lovely ladies signed up for the great Goodie Swap, which is beyond my hopes and expectations.  We are all really excited to get going, but sign ups will continue to Friday.  To get an idea of what my current mug rug crushes are, just have a peek at the mosaic I posted yesterday.  I wonder what my partners will make for me...or what I will make for them?

Lattice Illusions is FINISHED!  No need to say more except that I am completely thrilled with the finished product. It is a present, so I hope the recipient likes it too.

I conquered 3 of 4 Community Quilt corners.  They were so much harder than I thought they would be.  Had to adjusting my "calibrated" quarter inch seam, which clearly wasn't a quarter inch just to have seams match up.  Come to find out that indeed the machine is set up just fine and my needle is bent!  (Lesson learned - change your needle regularly.)  Painful, painful last little step.  Still, I have 3 finished and have stitched two and the connecting border onto one side of the top.

I ran out of little scrap 2 inch squares to finish the outer border of the corner 4, but more fabric on its way. Yippee for Celtic Fusion Fabrics small packs!

With Lattice Illusions finished, I can start a new project!  Here I will use a pattern called Mod Logs by Della Gardner.  Ages ago I bought two jelly rolls of Moda Fresh Flowers for this project, along with a Kona White background fabric.  I am really happy to finally jump into something new.

As usual on a Wednesday, I am linking up with Freshly Pieced WIP Wednesday.

WIP Update: running like crazy....but in a good way

Things are busy here at Fluffy Sheep Quilting, but that is how we like it.  Right?  Here's the WIP news:

Sign ups for a Goodie Swap, hosted here at Fluffy Sheep Quilting, opened as of yesterday. We will each make a mug rug and a goodie of our choice (such as a pin cushion or a needle book....or any item of our choice) for two swap partners and get two in return. I would love to have all of you participate, so go to this post and leave a comment if you are interested in playing along.  Awww, come on.  You know you want too :)

Lattice Illusions is indeed moving along. It is layered and the quilting finished. I did a simple stitch in the ditch to not take away from the lines/corners in the piecing. This is my first attempt at stich in the ditch and I am not entirely thrilled with it, but I made peace with that.  The binding is 75% hand stitched on, so hopefully you will see a finished quilt posted later this week.

I am still playing catch up for the Birdie Stitches BOM from Little Miss Shabby.  I recently finished the snorkeling August block, but still need to design and stitch a June block.  Hopefully that will be done before the September block is released.  Eeeekkk!  The pressure!!!

Our Community Quilt is moving again. The Kona Snow I needed has arrived (hooray Simply Solids!) so I could finish the back. I still have to piece the 4 corners and then attach the two remaining strips of binding to finish the top. with any luck, this will be layered over the weekend. I can not wait to start quilting this beauty.  Being the optomist I am, I already have the binding ready to go. I better finish it now, huh? :)

I am sorry for such a wonky picture. I promise it does look good. I had it on the clothes line and the sun was setting (hurry!  hurry!), but it is so big it would slip off of the line when I went to take the photo.  You only see about 2/3 of it here.  And, after watching my struggle, I had a little "help", which was no help at all.

The Sew Bee Blissful quilting bee (hosted by Sew Happy Geek) has officially kicked off.  I finished my first two blocks and shipped them off to our Queen Bee, Jenna.  I hope she likes them!

As usual on a Wednesday, I am linking up with Freshly Pieced WIP Wednesday, and Someday Crafts Whatever Goes Wednesday.

WIP Update: Stitching Like Mad

This has been a very busy sewing week for me.  I am excited about what I have accomplished.

Finished:
This week we completed our Japanese Fabric Swap.  We are very excited to receive our charm packs and a few folks are already posting finished projects using them!  For now, I am just happy to pet, look and imagine what I will create.  This week I will be adding a Japanese Fabric Swap tab to Fluffy Sheep Quilting. It's nearly ready for prime time!

Currently In Progress:
I finished the top for Lattice Illusions this week.  I am simply thrilled to have reached this milestone.  The back and binding are ready to go.  Tomorrow I will layer it and get to quilting.  I think I have a quilting plan that is mostly stitch in the ditch in the center three panels and a cross-hatch in the border "tiles".  We'll see how it goes, anyway.

I am still playing catch up for the Birdie Stitches BOM from Little Miss Shabby.  I have the January to May blocks finished, but not June.  I finished the July block earlier this week and have to jump in on August.  I want to put a little more of my own personality into this block calendar, so I'd like to re-design the June block to be a camping picture and the August block to be a snorkeling/diving scene.  I'll work on that this week.

My biggest source of pride this week is the near completion of our Community Quilt top.  I ran out of fabric and am waiting for more to arrive.  Once its here, I can finish the corner blocks, stitch on the final two borders (which are already pieced) and finish the back.  When layered I will (somehow) quilt this with straight lines so as to not detract from the piecing pattern.  The Kona Papaya binding arrived today.  I am really in love with the yellows in this quilt, so I wanted to highlight them in the binding.

I sent off my charms for the Rainbow Charm Swap 2 at Ellison Lane Quilts.  I am looking forward to seeing what lovely packet I get in return.

The Sew Bee Blissful quilting bee (hosted by Sew Happy Geek) has just started.  I am happy to be part of this, my first, quilting bee.  Come back tomorrow for a more detailed post!

Community Quilt Update

I am home this week on a quilty holiday (ahh, I have the life!) and my one of my two goals was to finish the Community Quilt top, the pieced back and get it layered.  Sadly, I am stuck!  ARGHH!!!  I mis-calculated (by a ton) how much Kona Snow I will need, so I have to wait for more to arrive by post.  Still, I did all that I can do this week:  finished piecing the top, made borders for all 4 sides (that you see on the bottom of this photo), attached the border on two sides and started piecing as much of the back as possible.

Here you see half of the quilt.  She is going to be a big one...much bigger than I originally planned.  The top, when finished, will be 96 inches square.  The aim was 82 inches square, but by mistake I made double the number of border pieces I needed (hence the double border here) so she's now larger by 7 inches a side.  Whew!  That's what happens when you quilt at 1 AM.  After all of that work, the cut Snow and little 2 inch patterned squares would just go in the scrap bin, so I decided to use them anyway.  I do really like the double line now that its there.

The other two borders are not attached because I ran out of Snow to piece the corners.  They are designed by my other half to be more decorative than the right angle turns that I had envisioned.  Once again, I like his taste in quilt pattern more than my own.

To my surprise (or due to my lack of vision) I am surprised by a beautiful pattern in the center of each of the diamonds made by the pieced Snow.  Each time I sketched the pattern this was just a blank space, but really there's a beautiful reverse Brigid's cross-like pattern in the fabric that I really love.  Bonus!

This is as far as I will get with this quilt this week.  I am absolutely in love with it and can't wait to see it finished!

I'm a small bit late, but this will be linked up with Freshly Pieced WIP Wednesday....

Community Quilt: Arrangement Options

I am in love with our Community Quilt right now.  I have finished making the 64 blocks and they are nicely squared, which was absolutely necessary due to my poor ironing skills.  Anyway, I took a little time over the weekend to position the blocks in different arrangements on my design bed.

You can make little diamonds.  Now, the bed is not large enough for the entire quilt, so there would be a 4th column of diamonds in the final version.  This is my favorite option.

You can make little squiggles.  This was too hard for my eye to focus on.  I was also having trouble envisioning quilting this, where with the diamond pattern you could do straight line diagonals or quilt a design in the center of each diamond.  Here, I didn't see the same variety of quilting options.

My other half thinks this looks like a snake skin pulled over the bed.  That is one massive, but colorful snake.  This was really pretty from above and would make a great wall hanging.  However, when my eye level is only a few feet above the bed (I'm a shortie) I could not see the full pattern and it looked like randomly placed blocks.

The diagonal blocks made me dizzy.  Need I say more?

Do you have a favorite?  I am curious to hear what you guys think.  The diamonds are stealing my heart right now, but I would like to hear your thoughts too.

To give credit where credit is due, the pattern and arrangement options are from Tea Quilts.  You can see a gallery of several finished quilts using this pattern here.

Congratulations to the Fluffy Sheep Quilting car boot(-ish) giveaway winners!   Eva of Pippa Blue won the bobbin holder, Hadley of Flying Blind on a Rocket Cycle won the chalk pencils, Katy of Miss Pixie will be receiving the fabric and Gill will give the pattern a try.  Your packages are going in the mail today or tomorrow.

WIPs Moving Along...

Most of my stitching this week has been on the Community Quilt.  I am really happy with how this is moving along.  I finished cutting my fabric and have started making blocks.  One block is made of six strips.  I have made all of the strips I need, so I am now stitching them together into sets of three, that are then put together in mirror image into a block.

There is a way to go yet, but I am completely happy plugging along.  There are several ways to align these blocks, each generating its own unique pattern.  I have not decided what it will look like yet, but I am enjoying day dreaming of my options.

Two more packages have arrived for the Japanese Fabric Swap!  I also gained a bit of courage and cut my own fabric (on the right in this photo).  Not to worry, swap partners, I did put a new blade on first!

Wednesday WIP News

The traveling last week made it a little difficult to sew.  Still, I have a little to talk about.

Currently In Progress:
According to last week's poll, 99.999% of you agree with my other half that Lattice Illusions should be split into panels instead of a solid block.  The changes are not made yet, but they will be this week.

Yippee!!!  We have the required 28 people needed for our Japanese Import Fabric Swap.  This week we are cutting our fabric.  I am nervous on this point, but I will eventually get the courage to start in.  Fingers crossed!

I am working on the May block of the Birdie Stitches BOM right now.  I really like the flowers as they add an abundance of color.  That being said, they take a lot longer to stitch than the other blocks.  I also have very little of my "official" Birdie Stitches green floss, so I think the stems will have to be several different shades of green.  That will be alright (I hope).

The Community Quilt is off and running!!!  This is where I spent most of my time this week.  I find it completely satisfying to see the stack of 2 inch squares get smaller and the pile of pieced strips get larger.  This is my pile of triplet strips.  The fabrics are so great!  This will take a while to piece the entire top, but for now I am happy just plugging along.

Thanks to so  many of you for your thoughts on washing batiks for my Irish Chain.  It seems that color catchers will be my best friends through this project.  Thank goodness I did pre-wash these strips or it could have been a real mess at the end.  Here they are all washed, air dried and ready to be ironed.  This week I hope to start cutting the strips and piecing.

Are any of you participating in Fairy Face Designs' Summer Sewing ? I have been thinking about the goals I listed a few weeks ago.  It may be time to return to that list for a bit of focus as I seem to keep going wider without finishing anything.

Projects Starting Up
Tetris and Fresh Flowers quilts are still sitting (I know, I know), waiting for me to pay attention.  Some day I will get around to starting in on them full force - I look forward to it!

WIP Wednesday: What do you think?

It was a good week for project preparation, not so much for finished products.  That's alright, though.  There is always room for mulling over a new project.

Currently In Progress:
Lattice Illusions has been occupying my mind lately.  I love this quilt top, but am doubting my original plan.

As many of you know, I do not have a design wall, but instead a design spare bed.  I was arranging my blocks last night into my original pattern, as photographed here without the borders.  My other half walked in, staggered and mumbled "My eyes!  My eyes!".  I get it - it's a lot to look at, but that's kind of the point.  You get lost in the pattern.

He re-arranged them into three panels with a border between each set.  Hummm....I think I like his pattern more than my plan.
So, I am looking for your thoughts.  Which pattern do you like more?  The solid block?  The panels?  I am still not convinced one way or the other and I re-arrange each time I walk by.  Which is your favorite?

Japanese Import Fabric Swap is moving along nicely. We have a few spots remaining, so if you are interested in joining in email me at fluffysheepquilting(at)gmail(dot)com.   You can page down to Monday's post for further detail if you are interested in learning more.  This is a swap modeled on that by Anne Marie of Gen X Quilters with her permission, but for folks in Ireland and the UK.
Birdie Stitches (hosted by Little Miss Shabby) is flying by (har, har, har).  I have finished three blocks, as you can see in yesterday's post, and have printed out the template for the May and June blocks.  Maybe you'll see another one finished by next Wednesday!

Lots of prep-work happened this week for the Community Quilt. I have my 1,300+ little 2 inch squares cut and sorted so that we'll have only 1 or 2 of each pattern. The remaining donated fabric will go to a pieced back.  I have the 500+ background pieces cut now, so it only remains to start piecing!  I am really excited to get this one going :)

Projects Starting Up
I cut fabric on Friday for the Irish Chain, but have not actually started to piece it.  Tetris and Fresh Flowers quilts are still sitting (I know, I know), waiting for me to pay attention.  Some day I will get around to starting in on them full force - I look forward to it!

Wednesday Progress

It was a good week.  A weekend in the garden, dinner with friends and a little sewing.  Who could ask for more?  This week was especially filled with some really great starts.

In General Interest
Have you seen this article in the Daily Mail entitled Why Quilting Improves Your Health In Ways Even Exercise Can't Manage?  Its your best excuse for skipping the gym this week.

As announced yesterday, I am starting a Japanese Import Fabric Swap.  This is a swap modeled on that by Anne Marie of Gen X Quilters with her permission, but for folks in Ireland and the UK.  About half of the placements are full, so sign up quickly if you are interested!  Just page down to yesterday's post and leave a comment to join.  Click quickly as spaces are filling rapidly!

Currently In Progress
Birdie Stitches (hosted by Little Miss Shabby) has captured my heart and time this week.  I have been stitching the February and March blocks to get started.  They are adorable!  I am missing a blue, green and taupe floss to finish them off, but hopefully that will work out by next WIP Wednesday.  I may start the April block today...I am sorry they are so wrinkly, but I do not want to iron them for fear the water soluble marker becomes permanent.

The Community Quilt has not progressed hugely this week. I have to cut the background fabric, a task for my Friday Night Sew In. I have a good number of little 2 inch squares cut, so I have started to sort them to ensure one scrappy fabric is not over represented in the quilt.  It's little stacks of two on the left and singles on the right.  Do you see your fabric in there?  If not, it's in the next bin that I am sorting and cutting...don't fret :)

You would not notice a huge change in Lattice Illusions, but I have been making more blocks and ironing to ensure the points are sharp at each block junction. I had a mile-high stack of individual blocks on my sewing table, so I decided to start piecing the center of the top even though I still need to make 12-15 center blocks to finish.  I just had to see something move forward instead of repeating myself again...and again...and again.  I love this quilt.  It will be the focus of my next Friday Night Sew In.

Projects Starting Up
I have not touched the Irish Chain, Tetris or Fresh Flowers this week to keep myself focused.  They are all so bright and colorful I am dying to jump in, but really I need to get another project finished before starting these.  They are the carrots (or Oreos really) at the end of my long, long stick.

As usual on a Wednesday, I am linking up with Freshly Pieced WIP Wednesday, and Someday Crafts Whatever Goes Wednesday.  Have a look at these sites.  You are bound to find something new!

A Quiet WIP Wednesday

It has been a slow week, so this will be a short post.  I have been off enjoying long weekends and playing in my garden instead of sewing.  You understand, right?

Currently In Progress
Birdie Stitches (hosted by Little Miss Shabby) is moving along!  It took me a while to get the fabric organized and cut, but I now have my 12 blocks made and ready for embroidering (right photo to highlight the fabrics).  I am really happy that this project is coming along and I can not wait to pick out my embroidery floss!

I am cutting like crazy to create squares for the Community Quilt, as you can see in yesterday's post.  I have more than enough cut now to get started, but I will have to continue to cut little 2 inch squares as the project progresses.  I ordered Kona Snow online to use as the background and it has just arrived in the post.  I will start cutting that next!

Lattice Illusions is getting a little repetitive.  I am completely happy with the pattern and the fabrics, but these blocks are time consuming.  I am still making strip sets to cut the little individual squares (4 of which create a 8 inch block).  I am trying to be persistent as I am truly enjoying it, but its a bit slow.

Projects Starting Up
In my Kona Snow box at the post office is also the background Kona White for my batik Irish Chain and my Fresh Flowers jelly roll quilt (photo left).  Once I get to the post office, I will have all of my fabric and my patterns to get started.  I may be a bit delusional here, but I keep thinking these are "quick" quilts.  Maybe I should finish off one of the ongoing projects before jumping in on either of these.

As usual on a Wednesday, I'm linking up with Freshly Pieced WIP Wednesday, but this week I am also going to jump in at Polka Dots on Parade Wow Me Wednesday and Someday Crafts Whatever Goes Wednesday.  Have a look at these sites.  You're bound to find something new!

WIP Wednesday Already?

What a week it has been!  I feel like I am all over the place, but standing still at the same time.  As usual this Wednesday, I am participating in WIP Wednesday over at Freshly Pieced.  Use the button on the right of my blog to hop over there and see what other quilters are posting.  Each week I find a new blog that brightens my day.

Starting Up
Community Quilt
I am absolutely thrilled with the response this project has received.  Many, many thanks to all of you who have contacted me and are planning to contribute squares. I have started to receive fabric from some folks and have been diligently cutting 2 inch squares over the past two evenings.  You guys really have adorable scraps!  I am having a great time peeking into your stashes :)  If you are interested in contributing, you can email me at fluffysheepquilting@gmail.com to participate. I am so very grateful, once again, for the generosity of this quilting community!

Several Others
Birdie Stitches, hosted by Little Miss Shabby, and my batik Irish Chain (fabric left) will start up next week.  I was mostly fabric shopping for them this past week.  It's funny how long it takes to buy a white background. Tone on tone or solid? White, eggshell, snow or cream?  Whew!  The options are endless!  Good old Kona.

Sew Mama Sew Giveaway
Like so many of you, I am participating in the Sew Mama Sew giveaway. You can just page down a bit or click here to take your chances winning a patchwork bag (photo right).  The drawing closes Wednesday night and even I am excited to see who wins! Blog hopping has taken a HUGE amount of my time this past week and it has been fabulous.  Hope you are having fun too!

Project Linus Quilt Top Donation
I have my Mystery Quilt top (below) all packed up and ready to go to Project Linus on Friday.  I think what they are doing is so great, so I wanted to do something special for them.  I spent a lot of time tonight going through my stash finding fat quarters to donate along with my quilt top.  I hope the Project Linus quilter likes them!

Lattice Illusions
I spent a good amount of time on Friday buying more fabric, cutting little squares, craeating borders, etc for Lattice Illusions.  You can page down if you want to see the details.  Long story short, the project is moving forward, but a little slowly this week.  I am still really enjoying this quilt, which is nice.

Lattice Illusions was the focus of my first Friday Night Sew In, hosted by Handmade by Heidi. I had a great time on Friday night sewing away. If you have not already participated, I suggest you give it a try next month. I will be back!

That is the news at Fluffy Sheep Quilting. A lot of running around and organizing, but little actual sewing. Let's hope that changes next week and I have something beautiful to show you!  Happy sewing, guys!

WIP Update

I hope you made quilty progress this week!  I am taking baby steps recently, but sometimes you need weeks like that.  I am participating in WIP Wednesday over at Freshly Pieced today.  Use the button on the right of my blog to hop over there and see what other quilters are posting.

Starting Up
Community Quilt
The aim of this quilt is to create something that incorporates fabric from bloggers, blog-readers, podcasters, etc; the internet community that has provided many of us with great inspiration.  This is such a special community of people.  I love the idea that this quilt could include folks from all over the world with varied taste in colors and print style, but we can all contribute to something beautiful.

I hope you all will participate!  I am looking for donations of 2 inch squares of any quilt shop-quality fabric.  I will request fabric of color or with a pattern.  In other words, not a solid white or cream that will be lost in the background.  Each little 2 inch square needs to "pop".  If you are interesting in contributing squares, please email me (fluffysheepquilting@gmail.com) or leave a comment below.  I would ask to have your fabric in the mail to me by Tues of next week ensuring it arrives by Fri (27 May).  I am completely grateful for your generosity!
I would like to make a scrappy Confetti quilt using a pattern from Tea Quilts.  You can view a gallery of finished quilts here.  The pattern calls for 1,328 little 2 inch squares that I will place on a Kona Snow background fabric.  If this goes well, I would like to (maybe) enter it into the International Quilt Festival of Ireland to be held in Galway next year.

Currently In Progress
Lattice Illusions
I am working on piecing my blocks together and making a half square triangle border this week.  I will need to get more fabric for the central blocks, but I have 22 of 30 finished and in pairs.  The center of the quilt will be 5 blocks by 6 blocks, so I will start making strips of 5 until I finish off the outstanding 8 blocks.

There will be two solid borders around the central 30 blocks, then a ring of half square triangles.  I was getting bored of piecing blocks together, so I started in on the half square triangles this week.  It was a nice break.  Only a few more to make!

Summer Sewing Plans

I have been inspired in many ways by Fairy Face Designs but most recently by Sarah’s Summer Sewing Linky.  You can find the details here (or use the button on the side bar) if you are interested in joining in too.  So, instead of our usual Wednesday work in progress update, this post is more goal-focused to finish off those projects and start new!  I have big, big plans for the next few months apparently.  I thought I would list them all and then hope to achieve 85% of them.  Here goes:

1. Finish my Quilting Guild of Ireland Mystery Quilt
I am nearly finished piecing the top, so by August I would like to have it quilted and bound.  Right now I am thinking it is really as ugly as ugly gets even though I love the fabric and each individual block. Let’s hope my attitude changes ASAP.

2. Fix and Finish my Sampler Quilt
This is so nearly finished, but I have two mistakes that need to be corrected by the end of May to pass it along as a gift.  I just need a Saturday afternoon to focus and do it right.  I am nearly there!

3. Carry on with Lattice Illusions
Right now this is living on my design wall semi-perminantly as individual blocks.  I am struggling here as I have deviated from the pattern,  It always takes me longer to work out what I should do when the pattern-creator is not there to instruct me J  I would be thrilled to have the top finished by August.  In all reality, it will not be quilted and bound.

4. Birdie Block of the Month
This is a new discovery for me, so I am just getting started this week. I have ordered the fabric (Moda It's A Hoot) and am waiting for it to arrive. I will have, by August, the 12 blocks made and the embroidery finished on the June, July, August.  With a bit of luck, I would like to have 2 of the January-May blocks done too.

5. Begin Piecing an Irish Chain
This is a quilt for me and I am completely excited. This will use a pack of 2.5 inch batik strips (below).  I am holding off starting this until I finish off one of the projects above.  By August, I would just like to start this project (i.e. finish off the others allowing me to start this project).

6. Start and Finish a Bag
This is a shoulder bag that I have the pattern and a set of charms for, but just need to start and finish it.  I think I am completely capable, but need to dedicate the time to work it out.  It will be finished by July.

7. Take a Precision Quilting Class
I have looked all over Ireland for a precision quilting class, but have failed to find one.  Sandy (over at Quilting for the Rest of Us podcast) positively reviewed a DVD that I am going to try.  I tend to be a very detail-oriented person (oh, my parents and brother are just giggling up a storm right now as that is the understatement of the year) so this would both sit well in my soul as well as help my quilting.

I am really looking forward to each of these projects.  I think it is a great idea to set up this list of goals and share progress with others through Fairy Face Designs.  Thanks, Sarah, for organizing – this will be a great time!

In other happy Fluffy Sheep Quilting news.... I am obsessed with Fluffy Sheep Quilting stats.  We have now achieved over 2,500 views in 2 months and I am completely thrilled.  Thanks, guys!  I am also in line to be a guest blogger in July, so keep an eye out.  I will post a link when the time comes. I am flattered to be included in this fantastic opportunity!
